According to reports in the Daily Mail, West Ham United have launched a £35m-plus offer for Lazio attacker Felipe Anderson.
The Daily Mail says that the east London club, who were given further reason as to why they must make a move to sign a 6ft 2in striker on a free this summer earlier this week, are keen to wrap up their transfer business early in order to give new manager Manuel Pellegrini a strong starting base ahead of the new campaign in August, and they want the Brazilian to join him at the London Stadium.
The report adds that the 25-year-old is keen to work with the Chilean boss, but they may face plenty of competition for the speedy winger’s services given he is so highly-rated and scored eight goals and provided a further 10 assists in 32 appearances in all competitions for the Serie A outfit this season.
The arrival of Anderson would certainly have plenty of consequences for the fans, the formation and for their current players and others that could join the Brazil international in joining the Hammers if a move does go through.
Here are three things that will definitely happen if West Ham seal the huge £35m deal…
Manuel Pellegrini has tended to favour the 4-1-4-1, 4-2-3-1 and 4-2-2-2 formations during his managerial career, and if he wants Javier Hernandez to be an integral part of the team next season and the Mexican stays, it seems likely that he will have to use the latter system seeing as the 29-year-old has struggled as a lone striker previously.
The arrival of Anderson at the London Stadium would only further highlight that fact, with the 25-year-old Brazilian able to play out wide on the right, but also in more of an attacking midfield role inside if required to.
Fitting the likes of Hernandez, Anderson, Marko Arnautovic and Manuel Lanzini won’t be easy, but the 4-2-2-2 formation may be the one Pellegrini chooses to go with if he completes the huge £35m deal this summer.
Antonio has already been linked with a move to London rival Crystal Palace this summer, and the arrival of Felipe Anderson at the London Stadium would surely push him closer to the London Stadium exit door.
While he is versatile and able to play as a full-back and wing-back on both the right-hand and left-hand sides – as well as a centre-forward – the 28-year-old would prefer to play on the right wing – the same position the Lazio man plays.
Antonio will know that he will be a substitute if the Brazilian does join in a £35m deal, and it will surely mean that he leaves the Irons before the transfer window slams shut on August 9.
If West Ham do sign Anderson, they may have a completely new right-hand side for next season with the club also said to be closing in on a deal for Fulham right-back Ryan Fredericks.
While the Cottagers man is a strong defender, he also has the energy to get up and down the pitch and help his team from an attacking point of view, and he could quickly form a strong partnership with the Brazilian.
The Lazio man is known for being willing to work back and help his defensively as well as his qualities in the final third, and that could be a vital attribute if he ends up playing alongside Fredericks.
