Fulham remain bottom of the Premier League despite securing a 3-2 victory over Southampton at the weekend.
Earlier this month, Slavisa Jokanovic was dismissed following a poor start to the season and was replaced by former Leicester boss Claudio Ranieri. Thanks to a brace from Aleksandar Mitrovic and a goal from Andre Schurrle, the Cottagers ensured his reign as manager started with a win. The victory was celebrated with a thunderous noise from Craven Cottage after some desperate defending guaranteed a much-needed three points.
Despite the victory, Fulham again looked less than secure at the back and had goalkeeper Sergio Rico to thank for some heroic saves. The Italian must be looking to strengthen his back line when the transfer window reopens in less than two months.
One man who should be on his shortlist is Villarreal star – Victor Ruiz. Valued at £10.8m by Transfermarkt, the 29-year-old has been a crucial player for his side since joining from Valencia in 2015. Ruiz made 27 appearances in La Liga last season and has started the new campaign in impressive form once again.
The Spaniard reads the game expertly – averaging an impressive two interceptions per game this season. Ruiz is also strong in the tackle, averaging 1.9 tackles per game, and would add some real steel to the Fulham back line. A no-nonsense defender, Ruiz is exactly what Ranieri needs, averaging 2.9 clearances per game in La Liga.
With his contract expiring in the summer, Ruiz would be available at a great price. His arrival at Craven Cottage would sure up their defence and help steer them away from danger.
