Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure has backed his side to make Champions League history this season and win the competition, after the club’s dramatic 5-3 victory over Monaco on Wednesday.
Pep Guardiola’s side came from 3-2 down against the Ligue 1 leaders to clinch a first-leg victory, though they have a huge task ahead of them when they travel to the French principality early next month with the aim of sealing a spot in the quarter-finals.
A rejuvenated Radamel Falcao helped to dismantle City’s defence in the recent match but Toure believes City have enough about them to go all the way this season, telling reporters after the match:
“An inexperienced team maybe would think the game was done, but with City we have a lot of experienced players in our team, like Silva — we always been used to coming back in games,”
“Today we showed a lot of desire and hunger as well. Because the history is not behind [us] — you know what I mean — a team like United, people will always believe them, because they have the history.”
“We just try to do our best, try to come close to United, but it’s what’s got to happen in the few years coming.”
Manchester City came close last season, before being beaten in the semi-finals by eventual winners Real Madrid, but the guidance of Guardiola has strengthened the Citizens this season and the trophy is definitely there to contend for.
