Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk says he would be “gutted” for supporters if the club won the Premier League title behind closed doors, according to Dutch media, via BBC Sport.
What’s the word?
The league has been suspended until April 3rd, at least, with no football to take place in the top-flight.
It has led to fears that the season could be played out without any fans in attendance and that, in turn, means that Jurgen Klopp’s side could well lift the trophy inside an empty Anfield.
And the Netherlands international admits that he would be disappointed if they had medals draped around their necks but there were no supporters to watch on.
Call yourself a Liverpool expert? How much did each of these big-money January signings cost?
He said: “If we won it in an empty stadium and the fans weren’t there, I’d be gutted for them.
“Obviously, if there are no fans at Anfield, then it will be a bit of a blow – no one wants to play games without the fans.
“Until a decision is made on how we go on from here, then we just have to deal with it. But when it happens, we are still bringing the title to our fans, definitely.”
Might be the only option
Of course, van Dijk doesn’t have a say in the matter and nor do Liverpool’s fans.
The club, and every side in the Premier League, is now at the whims of the decision-makers at the top of the game.
Should the league be resumed, and fans told to stay away from stadiums, it would at least offer the silver lining that they would be crowned champions officially, by reaching a points tally that simply cannot be caught by their competition.
There are other options, such as voiding the league, or taking it as it is currently, with Liverpool crowned league winners on 82 points.
Both of those would invoke an asterisk next to any potential triumph; at least if they can play the season out, fans or no fans, Liverpool will be crowned champions properly.
